Happy New Year Everyone!

The year 2013 was indeed a roller coaster ride for me. I had experienced a lot of ups and downs. Well, I know that this is really life, it's not always rainbow in the sky. I need to be strong for my dreams and aspirations.

I personally evaluate myself for the past year and I've realized that I missed a lot of my goals. I don't know if I just became too hard for myself last year, setting too many expectations. That's why for my 2014 New Year's Resolution, I just set some specific goals with time frame (I've realized the importance of time frame this will really motivate us to in achieving our goals). I see to it that these goals are attainable and feasible on my part. I will also have my monthly evaluation to see if I am really working towards my objectives this coming year.

The countdown says that it's seven and a half hours, then we will say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014...

Happy New Year Everyone !

May this new year brings us everlasting happiness, success, peace and prosperity!

Burn by Ellie Goulding

Sometimes when I feel so useless... bored or unmotivated to work, I will just listen to this song and it will bring back my enthusiasm and urge me to finish any task at hand...

I don't know... perhaps it's the beautiful lyrics, which are really inspiring, I would consider that "fire" as the passion for anything that we do. We should always keep it burning!

The smooth start and upbeat shift made this song very catchy and for sure it was already a favorite club music.

Christmas Novena 2013

I feel so blessed today that I have completed the nine-night series of masses called as "Simbang Gabi." To be honest, this is really my first time to complete this Christmas novena, and I am so happy that I did it with my beloved mother. We had some few attempts before, but some circumstances would not permit us to complete our attendance. So we really swear to ourselves that this year, we will really finish the novena. And we did it! Hurrah!

They said that once you completed the Christmas novena, the Lord would grant your wishes. For me, aside from this wonderful chance to offer a time for Him, having my wishes granted would just be a bonus from Him.  Well, I believe that He is a loving God, and that He would really grant all the desires of our heart in His own perfect time, no matter when you asked for it. Although, I should honestly say that deep within my heart, I really have some wishes that I would like to still come true.....

"I'm not a child, but still my heart can dream♪♫" as my favorite Christmas song goes... I still have dreams that I wish to come true... these are not only for me, also for my parents, two sisters, the whole family... I am very earnest for the realization of my dreams and I know that I can never achieve those alone... That's why I keep on praying for His Divine Intervention that I may be able to achieve them.

Topic for a Class Debate?

Oh-my! One of the tasks that we need to submit for the GURO21 Course 1 is a documentation for a CLASS DEBATE that we need to organize. I am teaching Computer Subjects and I just find it challenging to think for the topic that I can really relate to my field.

The passage of Cybercrime Law, which criminalizes any forms of computer crimes, is no longer an issue since it's officially recorded as a Republic Act No. 10175. I am thinking of the advantages versus the disadvantages of ICT in our lives, but is it really a debatable issue?  I am also considering the issue that Facebook should be totally banned among high school students... now this one could be something argumentative. Being hooked to online games is also a prospect topic for the class debate. I am giving myself to decide until this afternoon, so that I can still prepare the reference materials to guide my students in their research.

The module task also requires me to be observed by my instructional supervisor to assess the following aspects of my 21st Century Classroom Facilitation Skills:

  1. Facilitation style
  2. Accommodation of different learning styles
  3. Provision of learning environment that is conducive for active learning, higher order thinking and contextual learning
  4. Questioning and reacting skills

Season of Love and Giving

Welcome December!

This is it! The last month of the year! I already smell the holiday season... Family gatherings, treats, get-together and parties... But this year, most of the government agencies decided to donate their Christmas party funds to all the survivors of the Super Typhoon Yolanda. Our school will still have the party, but it was decided to hold it not too lavishly. We will just have a simple dinner in our covered court. This is to show our sympathy with all our fellow countrymen in the Visayas region who were still mourning for their losses.

Another thing that makes me excited during this season is the Simbang Gabi (Night Mass). This is part of Filipinos' family tradition, particularly those who are Roman Catholic. The goal is to complete the attendance for the nine-series mass, so that one could make a wish to Jesus. For us Filipinos, it becomes part of our devotion every December. After every mass, another thing that we are looking forward are the iconic foods like puto bungbong, bibingka and other kakanin, which are within or around the premises of the church.

All over the world, Christmas is celebrated as the season of love and giving. This is the time that we could share our blessings. Giving gifts not only to the ones we love, but also those who are in need.

Demo Teaching this Week!

What?! Time is flying so fast and I just realized that this week is my schedule for teaching demonstration. I don't know what gets in me... why I did not prepare for it last week, or yesterday... ah.. perhaps deep within me, I was hoping for a reschedule, a thing that will never happen. The department doesn't have any special event this week, and even if our head teacher will need to attend a meeting with the principal or outside the school, we have two master teachers that will be in-charge for the observation.

So.... it leaves me no options but to really prepare for my teaching demonstration. This kind of performance assessment for teachers is something I am not really afraid of.. actually this event excites me because it gives me opportunity to showcase and share my best practices in teaching. However, since I was flooded with other paper works, reading assignments for GURO21 class last week, I failed to allot a time for developing my lesson plan and instructional materials to be used for my demo. But it's not too late, most probably I will be scheduled this Wednesday or Friday, I can still work it out... I have a wonderful lesson plan in mind and I am very eager put it into action. As for my best practice, I would like to showcase the power of our new Net Support for School, a network application which is specially designed for computer laboratories.

I have decided to choose HTML Images as my topic, since I personally love discussing it every time I teach our web designing course.

By the way, yesterday, when I went to National Bookstore to buy some school stuff... I came across with a very fancy 2014 organizer/planner. The cover is black and red with stripes of "very gay" color combinations and four columns of silver cats arranged in the front page LOL ... although the outside cover and paper colors are really awkward, I still bought it...why? Because it will really guide you to live a happy life... it's like a mini-scrap book of things that you ought to do for the month, like music to listen, sports/activities to try, movies to watch, places to travel, and many more.

TECHNOLYMPICS 2013

This week was indeed tiring but satisfying. Our department joined the annual TECHNOLYMPICS, as part of Department of Education's Festival of Talents that showcased the skills and talents of our students in different fields of Technology and Livelihood Education.

The following are the different categories of events that were held last November 13 to 15:

Information and Communications Technology
  • Tarpaulin Designing
  • Web Page Designing
  • PC Assembly
Home Economics
  • Nail Art with Hand Massage
  • Children's Wear Construction (casual for girls, 5-6 years old)
  • Hair Style with Make-Up
Agri-Fishery Arts
  • Experimental Fish Dish
  • Chicken Experimental Cookery
Industrial Arts
  • Photo Silkscreen Printing and Designing
  • Creative Steel Baluster Making
  • Mini Cabinet Organizer
  • Landscaping
We joined only five events and fortunately bagged 2 fourth places for Web Designing and Tarpaulin Designing, and one first place for Landscaping. I trained the two contestants for the two ICT contests. Although, we really aimed for first place, it seemed that there were still more deserving students that were also competitive to represent our division. Nevertheless, I am still very proud of my students, who did their very best to win it.

There is still one event that we are preparing for.. the ICT Festival, which is most probably to be held this coming December. We are very positive that for that coming event, we will take home the championship!

I, together with Ms. Lerine, was assigned to host the opening and closing ceremonies of this event. Also, my head teacher asked me to design the official banner for our Division Level TECHNOLYMPICS 2013:

Rise Up Again Filipinos!

I feel really sad about what happened last week to the victims of the super typhoon Yolanda. I never expected that the death toll was feared to be at 10,000 (what happened to the pre-emptied evacuation?). There's no use blaming who should be accountable for this. Calamities are unavoidable, we could only do precautionary measures to be at least safe from its rage.

Many were shocked about how devastating the "storm surge" was. Despite President Aquino's plead to all Filipinos to be serious in preparation for this typhoon, grabbing another TV prime time air slot, it seemed that some still stayed in their homes near the coastal area. But I've heard that there was an evacuation area that was also affected by the flood caused by storm surge. Now I start to wonder if the people there in Leyte and other affected areas were really informed what storm surge really is, that it is a flood caused by the brushing of strong and high-speed winds by the typhoon, piling up the water above the normal sea level. Perhaps, if they were really informed properly, they could have chosen safer  evacuation areas, so lesser casualties and victims could be expected. Also, I wonder if there were really force evacuation done a day before the typhoon land to the province. [sigh]

Again, it useless to blame anyone here. What we should do is to think of a way on how we can be of help to all our "kababayan" who became victims of this catastrophe. A small deed of participating in a donation campaign in our school can be a great way to express our compassion to those who were affected. Or if there is not yet any campaign for it, please by all means initiate this project. It could help a lot.

God please help our fellow countrymen to stand up again after this tragedy. We are strong. But with You... we are STRONGER.

Super Typhoon "Yolanda"

Oh-my! This is not really a nice sight to see.

Super Typhoon Yolanda

A screenshot of the Super Typhoon "Yolanda" from PAG-ASA-DOST website. It has a maximum sustained winds of 215 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 250 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 33 kph. US meteorologists labeled this typhoon as the 'most powerful typhoon for 2013.'

Although it will not directly affect the National Capital Region, I am still praying earnestly for the safety of our fellow countrymen in the Visayas region. I hope that they will do all the precautionary measures (like pre-emptied evacuation) to be safe during the rage of this typhoon.

Keep safe everyone.

GURO21 (Gearing Up Responsible and Outstanding Teachers in Southeast Asia for the 21st Century)

Today, I attended the orientation for GURO21 (Gearing Up Responsible and Outstanding Teachers in Southeast Asia for the 21st Century) at DepEd NCR conference room. The orientation was facilitated by the specialists from SEAMEO-INNOTECH.

I was somehow awestruck at first because what I saw inside the conference room were pack of school heads. I thought I went to the wrong venue, but I knew I really heard it right from the office personnel. Oh-my! The current orientation was really for school heads for their ICeXCEL course. I was just relieved when I learned that our orientation was just a make-up, since I wasn't able to attend the actual orientation yesterday. I became more comfortable when I met some fellow teachers from different divisions that were also attending the make-up orientation with the INNOTECH tutors.

We all listened attentively to the presentations of Mr. Pierre Alejo, discussing about the background of SEAMEO-INNOTECH and features of the GURO21 courses. Ms. Joan Atienza gave her comprehensive orientation on how to use the iFlex interface, as the platform for our online learning.

We all received our copies of this Interactive CD, which included the 2 modules:

  • Module 1: Equipping Teachers with Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Values for the 21st Century; and
  • Module 2: Facilitating 21st Century Learning

Guro21 Interactive CD

I am really looking forward that this six-week professional development and learning experience will bring me to greater heights when it comes to my advocacy for 21st century student learning.

Welcome Sweet Second Semester!

I am just full of positive vibes now and I feel like the universe is not picking on me this time hehe.. I don't know but I just woke up in the mood, have a hearty breakfast, exercise for ten minutes and I went to school brimming with confidence and hope for a "happy back to school day" after the semestral break.

Flashback: I had an awful lot of bad days before the first semester ended, and it seemed that the world was closing in on me... But I just let those things happen... Recognize them as process that everyone would undergo in this journey called life. OK, so you're wondering what is this I am talking about... I'm not going to discuss it here further as part of my moving on process. I want to forget it, bury it in a deep blue sea. It's not because I'm trying to hide from it, but it's just that I don't want to complicate it more... I would really like to forget it BUT I am keeping those lessons I've learned. As the old adage goes: "It is through rough waters that one will become a more skillful sailor." I get to know myself and the people around me better after what happened and it seems that this adds up to my golden treasure of experience.

---[transition with bright light and whoosh sound effects]---

So let us go back to this wonderful day (and hopefully days ahead).

One great news I learned from my head teacher was that I was chosen to participate the SEAMEO INNOTECH GURO21 (Gearing Up Responsible and Outstanding Teachers in Southeast Asia for the 21st Century)! Four high schools in our division were invited to participate for this batch. For sure this will be another enlightening and challenging experience. The course covers the following modules:

  • Module 1: Equipping Teachers with Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Values for the 21st Century; and
  • Module 2: Facilitating 21st Century Learning

Another good thing that happens today was the Day 1 training of my students for the upcoming TECHNOLYMPICS. I was surprised by the visit of Genesis, one of my best students ever, who already won a web designing contest. I was glad to know that he was more than willing to support us in preparing Elton for the web designing contest.

When our head teacher posted the result of the last quarter examination, I was also amazed with the mastery level of my students. Very remarkable!
My fourth year class (out of 24 sections)
Top 1 - St. Peter (expected, they are the pilot section)
Top 3 - St. Timothy
Top 8 - St. Patrick
Top 11 - St. Joseph
Top 1 - Grade 8-Sampaguita (also expected, pilot section)
I can feel it.. there are a lot that is in store for me and my students this second semester!

Life is really a roller coaster ride. I may experience some bumps and rough waters, but it doesn't mean that I should stop or quit in pursuing my dreams. I am keeping my faith. I know that there is someone up there that loves me. He knows what my heart desires.

A prayer that says it all:

Lord,
You know all things,
You can do all things,
and You love me very much.

Curse of Chucky

It's Halloween night and I want to be scared hehe... so I watched the "Curse of Chucky." Since I was a child, I have been a fan of this slasher film about a "Good Guy" doll possessed by a serial killer, Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray.

This film is so much closer to the first three installments. A straight-forward horror, lesser comedy and more killing actions and fight scenes. The story traced back how the human Chucky was killed and transferred his soul to the doll. He was really insane and obsessed with Sarah, who was pregnant with Nica. He kidnapped Sarah and he was haunted by the policemen. He escaped after stabbing Sarah's stomach (that's why Nica was paraplegic). The policemen shot him to death. Since he was a voodoo practitioner, he was able to transfer his soul to a doll in the toy store.

His frustrations to transfer his soul to a child still persist in the film, this time his target is Alice, Nica's niece. At the end of the film is the epic cameo of the adult Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) pointing a rifle to Chucky's forehead.

Great film!

My horror movie marathon is not yet over, tomorrow I will watch Insidious 1 and 2, and Carrie. :D

"Wicked" The Broadway Musical in Manila 2014

Great! They extend the dates for the "Wicked" The Broadway Musical  next year.

But still the Ticket World website is giving me a pity stare 'cause I can't buy a ticket yet... -__-

I hope I could get my mid-year bonus sooner, because every time I visit this site to check the availability of the dates many bars are turning from green to red (excellent to limited)! I can never forgive myself if I will miss this one. I am a fan of the classic "The Wizard of Oz" and its parallel novel "Wicked"... Stories about wizards, adventures and magic always fascinate me... Also, it's been a dream for me to watch a musicale show, so I will really consider this as a treat for myself. I hope I can invite some friends to join me in this geekiness hehe...

Throwback Thursday (#TBT)

If you are also active in social network sites like Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, you might be very familiar with Throwback Thursday. I don't know how this digital trend started or who has the credit of coining these words and spreading it as a viral hash tag (#TBT), but one thing for sure is that it is becoming part of our weekly social media routine. There would be no Thursdays that I wouldn't see a post with this hash tag. Most of the times, it's really flooding my news feed, and I bet you're also experiencing the same or perhaps you are already hooked to this installment. Is this just a fad? I don't think so...  It seems that #TBT is here to stay.

But what is this hash tag? How can we participate with trend correctly?
Based from the different articles that I've read online,  I consolidated the rules or etiquette in using this hash tag and came up with the following five pointers:

  1. Throwback Thursday is meant to be fun. Choose a picture that will amuse your friends.
  2. The picture must be more than 3 to 5 years ago. But the more vintage your photo is, the more it has the right to be posted with #TBT hash tag. So dig in your photo albums, and start scanning your non-digital photos.
  3. Alright, so Flashback Friday is trying to steal the limelight, then use the #FBF every Friday that you feel nostalgic! But please, it's a big no-no to use #TBT to any other days of the week. I think this rule doesn't need further explanation.
  4. Consider your friends' sensitivity in posting an old picture with friends and tagging it with them. If you think the person won't be happy about it (a captured picture of his awkward moment). Try to seek his permission first before posting and tagging it.
  5. Do not overuse #TBT. I think posting two throwback pictures every Thursday is enough... posting more than two is already nostalgia overdose.
It's not even Thursday yet, and I'm starting to see photos with #TBT here in my feed... trying to be an early bird for tomorrow... Wait... I'm seeing a #WackyWednesday tag! What's this? Do we have to set another rule for this?

Edmodo: Where Learning Happens

Edmodo is emerging as one of the frontiers when it comes to Content Management Systems (CMS) for education. Teachers and learners call it as the Facebook for school. Its features are similar to the said social network site.

Edmodo Welcome Screen
Edmodo Welcome Screen
Nic Borg and Jeff O'Hara designed this 21st Century learning tool with the goal of closing the gap between how students live their lives and how they learn in school. Although, most schools block social networks to avoid distraction while learning, these two IT experts clung to the  idea of harnessing the power of a safe and secured social networking to connect teachers and learners anytime and anywhere. It is also designed to support the K-12 curriculum that is why it is very timely that all Filipino teachers should also learn and practice this tool.

What are the features of Edmodo that we can maximize to connect ourselves with the learners and to other people and resources? While visiting their site, I immediately checked their about section and learned that there are four key features of Edmodo that would really convince us to use it. These features are as follows:

  1. Engage - Edmodo is designed to engage students and take an active role in their own learning. Interactions between the teachers and learners can be extended through online discussions, polls and surveys. Giving feedback to the learners' output is also possible. There are even badges that students can collect after a remarkable performance and behavior.
  2. Connect - Teachers will act as the center of powerful networks of students, fellow teachers, administrators and even parents. The moment that you signed up for an account in Edmodo, you will be asked to create groups for each of your class. Each group will have a group code that you can distribute to your students. The students will use the group code to sign up for an account and become part of your group. Emails are optional in signing up for a student account.
  3. Measure - Edmodo has its very effective way of measuring the progress of our students. The teachers can create online quizzes with automatic scoring and grading system. You can also pulse the student reactions to the quizzes, assignments and discussions. Cool badges for great performance and nice behaviors are easily available. You can even create and share your own badges.
  4. Personalize - To amplify an effective learning plan, there are many applications that can be integrated as supplemental to normal online class instructions. The teachers can access both free and premium applications in Edmodo Store.
I would say that Edmodo is a very promising learning tool. There is no doubt that both teachers and learners will benefit from this. It is just that teachers should have the right attitude towards technology used to improve education. But probably many are still skeptic about Edmodo and even other ICT tools integrated in teaching and learning. However, like many progressive countries, we need to revolutionize our education and emerge with best practices integrating technology to produce graduates that are competent enough to face this fast-changing world.

It just needs your little time and effort to learn this very powerful ICT tool.
So sign up for a FREE ACCOUNT (yup, it's true ... the best things in life are FREE!)

ICT in Education Planning and Management

Last October 4, 2013, instead of enjoying with my fellow teachers in the World Teachers’ Day celebration in our school, I attended a seminar workshop about Information and Communications Technology in Education Planning and Management. But I didn't regret accepting the task to attend to this event, because I knew that I would learn something new from this.

The learning event was sponsored by Felta and Intel. It was held at Astoria Plaza, Escriva Drive, Ortigas, Pasig City. Educational supervisors, ICT coordinators and computer teachers from different divisions of Metro Manila were invited to this event. The keynote speaker, Mr. Benjamin Vergel De Dios, guided the participants into a modular approach of developing an ICT program for every DCS.

First, every division was asked to present the CHALLENGES that we were currently encountering about ICT program implementation. Then, the speaker talked about the uses of ICT in Education particularly in teaching and learning process. He also discussed about the stages of ICT development and its pedagogical uses. I was amazed when he presented the ICT Master Plan of Singapore and Korea. How I hoped that we could do the same in our education system. Mr. De Dios said that they succeeded because they had a vision.

Mr. De Dios, while discussing the Stages of ICT Use

The next activity was about writing our VISION. In writing our vision, the speaker gave us the following guide questions:
  • What do we do?
  • How do we do it?
  • From whom do we do it?
After stating our vision, which we proudly presented to all other ICT leaders, we were guided by the speaker to come up of at least TOP 5 PRIORITIES for ICT program to achieve our vision.

Lastly, all ICT leaders were encouraged to conceptualize an ICT PROJECT by setting goals and objectives, identifying components and activities, and allocating funds. He even shared some of the ICT projects and best practices of other schools around the country to serve as our inspiration in working with our own.

Conceptualizing ICT projects for your division

Mr. De Dios, in his closing, shared a challenging quote from Karen Salmansohn, “Don’t shrink your dreams. Super-size your courage and abilities.” It is indeed a challenge to transform our education system through ICT. With limited resources and cynicisms, we might really shrink our dreams and just settle for pre-historical approaches. But an ICT in Education leader should strive with his super-sized courage and abilities by upgrading himself and improving the learning situation of his school/division.

Mr. and Ms. Teacher Idol 2013

As part of the World Teachers’ Day celebration, the Faculty Club of Gen. T. de Leon National High School organized the Mr. and Ms. Teacher Idol 2013 “The Ultimate Search for GTDLNHS Teacher Idols.” I never expected that this event would turn out to be huge. The support of students and teachers for this event was overwhelming. The goal of this project, as an income generating activity, was to support for the expenses of faculty dinner and dance party.

The logo that I designed for this event:

The pageant was a personality and popularity contest.
The following were the criteria for judging:

Popularity (ticket canvassing)                                           50%
Fashionista Attire and Long Gown/Formal Wear          25%
Q&A/Interview                                                                   25%

During the pageant night, all teachers and students screamed at the top of their lungs calling the names of their bet teacher idol candidates. In the end, Mr. Rainier Concepcion and Ms. Sheila Marie Juralbar, both from English Department, were crowned as Mr. and Ms. Teacher Idol 2013. First Runner-Up winners were Mr. Robert Obispo and Ms. Maricon Valeza, both from Science Department and Second Runner-Up winners were Mr. Jesher Baldove and Ms. Archie Vergel, from Math Department.

TEACHnology Tools of the 21st Century “Creating Interactive Presentations”

As our final requirement for our Knowledge Management subject in our graduate program M.A.Ed. Educational Technology, we organized an ICT literacy seminar-workshop titled: TEACHnology Tools of the 21st Century “Creating Interactive Presentations.”

The banner I designed for this seminar-workshop

We held it last September 28, 2013 in Sta. Elena High School, Division of Marikina City. Some selected teachers of the said school were our participants.

As the class president, it was indeed a challenge to delegate tasks and coordinate all our efforts to make this event a success. I was glad to have very cooperative classmates, who would always participate actively and perform their duties wholeheartedly.

We were very thankful to Facebook Group, because it became our official bulletin to keep everyone updated about our preparation. Our class was also blessed to have Mr. Ryan Lee on our side, because he took the role of being the speaker. It was not an easy job for him, but he generously shared his talents in his topics about: Advance PowerPoint and Creating Newsletters with Publisher. As a treat, Ms. Dessa Joy, also our classmate, shared to our participants about the power of Edmodo as a course management system.

Here are some pics during the seminar workshop. (Photos below credit to Sir MJ Serafica)

Participants were amazed while Sir Ryan discussed
the Advance PowerPoint

Busy working with their Class Newsletters

Participants were listening intently while Ma'am Dessa
discussed the Edmodo registration

After the tiring day... how about a nice pose :)
After this event, we all went home tired but happy, because we had finally surpassed the challenge to share knowledge and promote dynamic teaching and learning through ICT among our fellow teachers.

Maka-KaLIKHAsan "On-The-Spot Recycled Project Making Contest"

Last September 27, St. Louis College of Valenzuela, on their College Week, invited all fourth year high school students to join the campaign against climate change. As part of their Eco-Fair, they held the Maka-KaLIKHAsan, an on-the-spot project making contest. I chose two of my most creative senior students and we joined this very challenging competition.

In this contest, the goal was to come up of a recycled product out of scrap materials that SLCV provided (old diskettes, egg trays, cartons, CDs, old newspapers and magazines). The final outputs were judged according to the following criteria:

·         Use of Recyclable Materials – 40%
·         Creativity and Craftsmanship – 40%
·         Originality – 20%

After revealing the materials to be used, the coaches were given the chance to collaborate with their students on what particular output they could come up with using those materials. The coaching was limited to ten minutes, so I maximized the time in helping my students to figure out their output. Then, we decided to come up with a TABLE ORGANIZER. Here is their recycled product:

Office table organizer with flower vase and picture frame

These are the outputs of other schools who also participated:

While the outputs were being judged, we attended the Kabataan para sa Kalikasan Forum. We learned a lot from the speakers who talked about small ways that the youth can do to battle against the danger of the climate change.

When they announced the winners, my students were filled with joy, because in spite of so many beautiful entries, we still bagged the THIRD PLACE! My students received trophies (the trophies are also recycled, made of twisted old newspapers coated with bronze paint) and a cash prize of 1000 pesos.

With Ms. Venus Bucud, SLCV College Marketing Officer

A Very Frenzied Week

Wow! I couldn't imagine how I survived the last seven days. To give you an idea how frenzied my schedule was, here’s a peek:

  • September 27 : On-the-spot recycled project making contest in St. Louis College of Valenzuela
  • September 28 : TEACHnology Tools for the 21st Century Learning, an ICT literacy seminar workshop we organized as our final requirement in Knowledge Management course
  • September 29 : Bulletin board/school organizational construction with a Sir Mike and Ma’am Cora
  • September 30 – October 3 : Preparation for the Mr. and Ms. Teacher Idol 2013
  • October 4: Attended ICT in Education Planning and Management

This will also explain why I haven’t had a post for a while. I want to tell all my wonderful experiences and crunch them in this single post, but I am afraid that I may miss some details and insights I feel like sharing with you, so I have decided to post these events one at a time.

I'm done with our department's logo design that we will use for our banner this coming World Teachers' Day parade of our school. I am really struggling at first on how to start this task, I considered a lot of symbols to represent the different areas and specializations that we are teaching. My first drafts are with complicated and many symbolism that they appear like hodgepodge. So, in the end, I decided to make it simple by using the gear symbol to represent technology and the torch to represent education/learning.

CorelDRAW X5, a very powerful vector-based drawing program, was the application I used to create this logo.

A Prayer for Perseverance in Times of Rejections

I intentionally search for this prayer from the booklet PRESENCE "Prayers for Busy People" published by St. Paul Publication. The prayer is about asking for courage in times of troubles in life, particularly in times of rejection. I just feel for this prayer right now.

It's not easy, Lord, to follow after you.
You take the hard road with joyous leaps and bounds.
But I stumble over every stone and slip into every rut.
You calmly weather each storm
and walk calmly through the night.
But I am buffeted by the winds
and I always falter in darkness.
You always have the right answers, Lord,
for those who confront you.
But my tongue is thick and clumsy.
I cannot articulate what I feel
or what they need to hear.
You have the wisdom and power to meet the needs of men around you.
But I am foolish and ineffective,
and my friends turn away from me in disgust.
I have really tried to relate
to the people about me.
To reach out to them in real love and concern.
I have tried to share their sorrows and their joys.
I have shelved my own ambitions
to respond to their needs.
But when I fail to reproduce for them
what they want,
or when I am limited by my humanity and
incapacitated by my own personal problems,
they will have nothing to do with me.
I feel sometimes as I have been used
only to be abused.
I am squeezed dry by my friends
and then cast aside
as if I was of no further value.
Yet I must continue to follow you, Lord.
It is a hard path to walk
and I am sure that I will falter at times.
I desperately need an occasional oasis of rest
along this journey through wind and sand.
I need desperately your touch of peace and love
As I labor amidst the blood and tears
of this distorted world of ours.
I am empty, Lord, help me to feel your fullness.
Grant me the grace and courage
to be faithful to you in all my daily loving.

How Did I Get So Busy?

I was checking my daily planner and I was shocked to learn on how hectic my schedule would be by this week. To give you an idea on why I felt so overwhelmed, here's a peek of my to-do list:
  1. Faculty bulletin board
  2. Greetings banner for World Teachers' Day
  3. Backdrop design for photo booth
  4. TLE department logo
  5. Meeting with the Mr. and Ms. Teacher Idol 2013
  6. Recycled product making contest
  7. Seminar workshop for Edmodo
I really don't know if I can still get out of this schedule alive! Of course, time management is the key here, but sometimes I think that I am drowning myself into this busyness thing. Now, I remember the book that I've read titled "How Did I Get So Busy?" by Valorie Burton. It is a small book comprised of 28-day plan to free our time, reclaim our schedule, and reconnect with what matters most. I grabbed the book today and schemed it for those helpful tips on how to redefine a busy lifestyle and carve out time into things that would reflect my highest priority.

How Did I Get So Busy

After reviewing this book, some of those principles that I think will help me make it through this very demanding schedule are as follows:

  • Assess your situation. It is so important that we acknowledge that there is a problem that must be resolved. If you think that your busyness becomes a hindrance for a satisfying life, then it is time for us to find out in which aspect of your life it has invaded you: work, relationships, finances, health and spiritual life. By doing an inventory you can now deal with the specifics. In this way you will find out what are those activities that are making demands on your time. Then, try to 'dream' about your ideal life, with a lot of space to accomplish those things that really matter for you.
  • Hurrying up is slowing you down. "Only fools rush in," as the popular song goes. Most of the time we tend to rush things to save more time or to catch up, but in reality we are just consuming more energy for something that will fail because for sure there will be details that we will miss in an hurried task.
  • Tame your to-do list. Just like what I am experiencing for the past few days, it seems that the tasks are daunting and never ending. I always feel the need to be ahead and so I will fill up my list with tasks that will make me two steps ahead of what I should suppose to accomplish. In this book, I relearned the importance of breaking bigger tasks into smaller and simpler tasks and tackle them one at a time.
  • Break your procrastination habit. In this book, the author shared her weapon to overcome procrastination: "Dig your heels and just do what needs to be done." Specifically, she gave the following approaches on how to deal with procrastination:
  • Commit five minutes to tasks and you will surely gain the momentum to finish the project.
  • Stop making it a big deal. Once we perceive that what confronts us is a great deal, it overwhelms us and then we get stuck.  The result: we tend to avoid it and proceed to those we can get easily done. What we should do here is to break the tasks into manageable pieces.
  • Give yourself the permission to do it imperfectly. To err is human. Remember that we can always find the time to polish our work. What important is that you start working on it.
  • Make it fun. Enjoy while doing the task. Invite a friend to help you accomplish it. Play a background music to keep you moving.
  • Drop the goal and enjoy the day. Do not pretend to be a superhuman that can do great accomplishments all in one day.  If you think that you can no longer finish the task for today, drop it from your list and enjoy the moment without thinking about it. This will save from being guilty about procrastination.
It's been years since the last time I read this book and I'm glad to revisit it today for some sort of inspiration and encouragement. I hope that this can also help you in dealing with your busy days. So if you will excuse me, I still need to revise my to-do list. :)
